At Apple Arts Studios, we’re always pushing the boundaries of performance capture. Recently, our team took on a unique challenge: setting up a mobile OptiTrack motion capture system on a cricket ground at IIT Goa for Quidich Innovation Labs to track ball movement with absolute precision.
This was not your typical indoor mocap session. We designed and executed a full-scale outdoor capture pipeline, deploying OptiTrack PrimeX 22 cameras under floodlights, calibrated to track fast-moving cricket shots with high accuracy.
The Setup
Every evening at 5:00 PM, our team began rigging the cricket ground with multiple OptiTrack cameras.
By 5:30 PM, calibration was complete, and the capture floor was ready.
Recording sessions ran until midnight, capturing hours of authentic cricketing action.
The two-day shoot produced an extensive library of high-quality ball-tracking data for Quidich.
Despite the challenges of low light, large outdoor space, and extended hours, our system performed flawlessly.
Why This Matters
Outdoor mocap setups aren’t common in the industry. They demand precision planning, robust hardware, and a skilled team to ensure smooth execution. By pulling this off, we’ve proven that our team is capable of seamless motion capture not just indoors, but in dynamic outdoor environments as well.
This project reinforces Apple Arts Studios’ commitment to innovation in animation, sports tech, and real-time performance capture.
The Experience
Our crew described this project as one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences so far. With the perfect blend of technology, teamwork, and adaptability, we delivered a solution that showcased what’s possible when mocap meets sports performance analytics.
We’re excited about the new opportunities this opens up — from sports visualization and broadcast graphics to next-gen gaming and animation pipelines.
