What Happens When Film and Game StudentsStep Inside a Professional Motion Capture Studio?

From Classroom to Capture Volume — What Really Happened
For most students studying film, animation or game design, motion capture is something they see in behind-the-scenes documentaries. It feels distant — something that happens in massive studios in Los Angeles or London. Apple Arts Studios decided to change that for a group of students from VIT School of Media, Arts and Technology — V-SMART.
We opened our professional motion capture studio in Hyderabad for a full live workshop. Not a presentation. Not slides. A real, working demonstration inside a live production environment — suits on, cameras running, characters moving on screen in real time.

What Is VIT V-SMART?
VIT School of Media, Arts and Technology — V-SMART — is one of India's premier institutions producing the next generation of filmmakers, animators, game designers and media technology professionals. Bringing these students into a working professional mocap studio is exactly the bridge between education and industry that India's creative technology sector needs.
Inside the Studio — What Students Experienced
Step 1 — Learning the Technology Behind the Capture
The moment students walked into Apple Arts Studios, they were standing inside a full production environment. Our camera truss system runs around the full perimeter of the capture volume. Optical mocap cameras with infrared LEDs track reflective markers on a performer's suit to within millimetres of accuracy. Our team walked students through how this works — the science of retroreflective markers, triangulation and real-time skeleton solving.

Step 2 — Suit Up and T-Pose Calibration
Performers dressed in full optical mocap suits — markers placed at every key joint and body point. Students watched exactly how the system is calibrated, how a T-pose is used to establish the baseline skeleton, and how the capture system maps marker positions to a digital skeleton model.

Step 3 — Live Performance Capture
The moment that changes everything — performers moved on the capture floor while students watched a digital skeleton mirror every movement in real time on screen beside the capture volume. No delay. No editing. Raw human performance becoming digital animation data, live. This is the moment when motion capture stops being an abstract concept and becomes real.

Step 4 — Experiencing the Full Live Mocap Workflow
Students watched the full production workflow — from performer preparation and suit fitting, through live capture, to data review. They saw how motion capture is used in real productions for film, games, VFX and AI datasets. They asked questions. They watched sequences captured and replayed. They left understanding not just what motion capture is — but how it actually works in production.

What Industries Use Motion Capture?
For students who attended the workshop — and for anyone reading this — here is where motion capture is used worldwide:
● Feature films and VFX — Napoleon, Transformers, major Hollywood and Indian productions
● AAA video games — Call of Duty, Gotham Knights, Far Cry 6 and many more
● Animation — film, TV, streaming and digital content
● Virtual production — Unreal Engine real-time environments
● AI training datasets — human motion data for embodied AI and humanoid robotics
● Computer vision — activity recognition, HOI, locomotion datasets

Why This Matters — Motion Capture Education in India
India's film, game and animation industry is growing faster than the education system can produce trained professionals. Most students graduate from media arts programs without ever having seen a professional motion capture system running live. The gap between what is taught and what the industry actually uses is significant.
Apple Arts Studios has been operating since 2011. In 15+ years we have delivered motion capture for international feature films, Hollywood productions, AAA games and major Indian productions across 18+ countries. The knowledge and experience we have built is something we want to share with the next generation.
Workshops, Studio Visits and Educational Collaborations
Apple Arts Studios is open to hosting workshops, studio visits and educational collaborations with universities, film schools, game design programs, animation institutes and media arts institutions — in India and internationally.
