Ask anyone building humanoid robots or physical AI what's slowing them down, and you'd expect the answer to be hardware — actuators, compute, batteries. It isn't. The real bottleneck is data.
Specifically, high-quality human motion data: the ground-truth demonstrations a robot needs to learn how to move, balance, walk, and manipulate objects the way a person does. Without enough of it, even the most advanced humanoid stays clumsy. With it, models learn faster and generalize better.

Why data is the constraint
Modern robot learning — imitation learning, reinforcement learning, foundation models for embodied AI — is hungry for motion. These models don't learn from code alone; they learn from examples of real human movement. The more varied, clean, and accurate those examples, the better the robot performs in the real world.
But sourcing that data is hard:
Public datasets were mostly built for animation or academic research, not robotics. They rarely include clean hand and finger manipulation, multi-actor interaction, or the task-specific actions a given robot needs.
Teleoperation is slow and expensive to scale.
In-house capture requires a full optical motion capture stage, trained performers, and a processing pipeline most teams don't have.
So teams end up data-starved — the single biggest thing holding their robots back.
